The iPhone Universal Remote, does it really work? Or will it get tossed in the pile of "once thought to be useful" iPhone attachments? Like that blender attachment advertised last year... OK, just kidding on that one. I couldn't resist. Seems like the iPhone can do everything these days. Back to business! We are going to take a look at the common features found on most of these Universal Remote attachments for the iPhone, then if you decide you are cool enough to own one there is a great Squidoo article I wrote all about these that I posted below. I recommend going there to check out in-depth reviews along with the latest deals and to compare prices, it's always up to date.
The iPhone Universal Remote is...
It's just cool, whether it works well or not! But the good news is that they DO work. Some better than others according to all the reviews floating around the web. Here is the really cool thing though. These can be used to control a lot more than your TV, DVD, stereo, or cable box. They can control any device that receives standard (infrared) signals. That means lighting systems, ceiling fans, air conditioners etc...
The Holy Grail of iPhone Universal Remotes
There is one that trumps them all though, as far as what it can do. It's the RedEye Universal Remote System for iPhone. This baby does everything the others do, but adds WiFi technology to the mix. What you get are little "infrared WiFi pods" that you can place in all your rooms in your house that have devices you want to control.
Then lets say you want to turn on some music in your living room, but your stuck in the kitchen. No problem, just whip out your iPod and tap a few buttons and your dancin' in the kitchen to your favorite 80's songs! I assume that's what everyone does when they are stuck cooking in the kitchen? Not only that, but say you are too lazy to even push a button. You can set it up to read data from the internal accelerometer, and have it switch tracks, change TV channels, or whatever you want when you flick your iPhone from side to side. Pretty slick eh? It will come at a premium though. The RedEye runs about $180.00, which is about 2 to 3 times as much as the others.
So what have we learned?
With the iPhone Universal Remote, we can pretty much get rid of any other remote we were using before.
The cost is actually reasonable since you can replace several remotes, and do stuff usually reserved for high-end models.
They are very portable. Take it to the office, meeting, party etc...
Since they have pretty much any code for any device, we can quickly set it up to prank our friends at their own place. Use your imagination!
OK. I'm sure you are tired of listening to me already so if you are really serious about one of these I recommend picking one up soon. I just looked and Amazon.com is saying there are only a few RedEyes in stock. And if Amazon.com is low on stock, along with Christmas right around the corner, don't say I didn't warn ya if you can't find one on Amazon or anywhere else. As a side note these make great Christmas presents.
